Town Of Runners is an award winning feature documentary about young athletes from Bekoji, Ethiopia.

The film follows young athletes as they move from school track to national competition and from childhood to adulthood. The story centres on a former PE teacher, Coach Sentayehu Eshetu, who has discovered and trained many of the world’s leading long distance runners, including Derartu Tulu, Tiki Gelana and the Beijing double Olympic gold winners Tirunesh Dibaba and Kenenisa Bekele, all of whom grew up in Bekoji.

Running Across Borders were the first organisation to establish a presence in the town specific to sport and development. After our invitation to be part of the round table presentation at The Good Pitch, London, 2009 RAB committed to work with Town of Runners' Director Jerry Rothwell and Producers Daniel Demissie and Al Morrow to ensure a legacy for the film was achieved.

Today this legacy continues to be the focus of our work in Bekoji alongside stakeholders we brought together in subsequent years. These organisations include Ethiopia Reads and their work to improve the Library facilities, Girls Gotta Run Foundation and their work with young girls through their lifeskills programme and Africa and Sport via practical athletics support and funding.
