Sponsor the English Teacher
Ms. Tinbit Amare, an experienced teacher currently completing her M.A. in Journalism at the nationally-renowned Addis Ababa University, is the Running Across Borders English Teacher. She designed the curriculum in consultation with the RAB co-directors and cooperates with Coach Melaku, providing essential female representation in the leadership of the camp given our support of both female and male athletes.
The teacher provides 10 hours per week of English as Second Language (ESL) lessons to all of the athletes. ESL is an essential prerequisite for all such higher training and even athletes who develop into full-time professional runners need to know English, to communicate over logistic and financial matters revolving around international competitions. Furthermore, for the athletes ultimately pursuing other forms of employment, English communication is essential for tasks such as using computers, working in tourism related to running, and serving roles in the operations of other international social development NGOs.
While the athletes learn basic skills like grammar, reading, listening, and writing there is also a strong emphasis on speaking skills; in particular student-athletes are put in situations where they need to speak and converse in English in front of the whole group. Lastly, around 2 hours per week is devoted to special applied assignments.

This amount is the average salary of a working person in Ethiopia. All foreign administrators and staff of Running Across Borders work voluntarily. The English Teacher and Supervisor, however, will be a qualified Ethiopian individual we will be asking to live in the training camp on a full-time basis. Ethiopian university graduates have generally made significant sacrifices to pay their tuition and attend university, and cannot afford to spend their first two years after graduation working for a non-profit organization without receiving adequate compensation.

This amount covers the books and other supplies required for the teacher to design and implement effective curriculums.

- If you are a teacher yourself you can work with us to integrate cooperation between your school and the training camp. We already have pen pal programme for our 5 female athletes with a school based in Washington DC and one of male athletes is already sponsored by a english teacher from the UK.
