Employment
For the East African athletes not currently at world-class status, we arrange employment opportunities to be pursued during their non-running time as a means of supporting themselves. The main possibilities are sports administration, sports tourism, sport and health science research, and social development through sport.

Progress to Date

Sports Administration: In our camp in Addis Ababa our athletes act as chefs, cleaners, and household maintenance and repair specialists and we plan to sponsor athletes through computing, accountancy and management courses in order that they can assist in the smooth operations of the camp.

Sports Tourism: Athletes provide tourism services to visiting foreign athletes

Social Development through Sport: Collaborations are being arranged with other locally-operating social development organizations, through which the athletes can contribute to other social development projects. For our first project we aim to work with Sagada Development Association, to provide HIV awareness education to highly-affected areas in Addis Ababa.

Sport and Health Science Research: We have provided maximal and sub-maximal oxygen uptake testing (an advanced diagnostic scientific resource used to inform coaches and athletes) at the camp in Addis. This is connected with our collaboration with the International Center for East African Running Science (ICEARS), a virtual centre initiated by Dr. Yannis Pitsiladis of Glasgow University, facilitating international collaboration between academics around the world with specialized interest in the East African running phenomena.
